Start from/arrive at Kikonai

Easashi Town used to be a economic and political center of Matsumae Clan in the Edo Period. The cycle tour course along the coast of the Tsurgaru Strait and Sea of Japan includes Esash and the Cape Shirakami, the southern most point of Hokkaido on the way and abounds in historical and natural amusements. There are several rest spots including Michi-no-Eki.

FEATUREThe course highlights

The features of the curse are historical areas that have historical monuments and nice sceneries such as the Tsugaru Straight and the Sea of Japan. It will be a day tour for a tough cyclist. To take time, a few day trip will be appropriate, staying at Matsumae and Esashi.

The Cape Shirakami located on the course is highly recommended to cyclists. At Michi-no-Ekis along the way are useuful to rest or take meals.

You will start from and arrive at Kikonai Railway Station that is known as the southernmost station in Hokkaido.Shinkansen trains and common trains of the local Isaribi line stop at the station. The National Highway Rt.228 whose traffi is busy with heavy and large vehicles is not safe for cycling. Therefore, using the railway of Isaribi line between Hakodate and Kikonai is recommended for cyclists. It takes about one hour.

  • Kikonai Station

    Take Rt. 228 along the Tsugaru Strait to Matsumae (to the southwest)

  • Via shiriuchi

  • Via Fukushima-cho

    Sengen, Fukushima Town You will pass a 167 m elevation pass. The highest point is in Fukushima Tunnel. The Tomonai side is a long moderate slope and Fukushima side is relatively steep.

  • Via Matsumae

    The course repeats ups and downs frequently. The view of the Japan Sea is great.

  • Via Kaminokuni

    Take Rt. 228 along the coast toward Esashi.

    Mt. Iou can enjoy the superb view of Petit Hill Climb in the first half and downhill in the second half. In the direction of Esashi, a flat road along the sea continues.

    From the foot path course passing the town center to Inishie Kaido in Esashi.

  • Via Kaminokuni

    Take the prefectural road Rt.5 toward Yunotai-Kikonai

    Pass over a pass whose elevation is 150m on the town boundary. The highest point is at 1.5 km long Shinyoshibori Tunnel. The up and down gradients are almost the same.

    Across the rail crossing appearing immediate after the elevated Shinkansen railway and turn to the left at the next intersection to head for Kikonai JR station.

    On this beach, a ritual "kanchu misogi" that has been performed since 1831 is annually held. In the ritual, four young people plunge into the mid winter sea of the Tsugaru Strait, carrying a potable shrine and praying good harvest.
